I have copied 2016 pictures to a different drive. What is the best way to have Lightroom recognize the new folder locations of these images?

The best way would have been to have simply moved these images (or folder of images) to the other volume using the Folder panel and drag & drop.
Now that you have the images in the other volume, LR is still pointing to the folder in the original volume which still exists because you Copied rather than moved the images (or folder of images). If the folder that you Copied was named "2016", your next step is to find that folder in the Folder panel, right click on it to open the context menu and choose "Update Folder Location..." from the menu. In the Windows dialog that opens, navigate to the folder named "2016" located in the new volume and choose it.

Here is a Link to Victoria's Blog article that explains hoe to move photos: How do I move only my photos to another hard drive, leaving the catalog where it is?
