okay guys, I did this, it worked, now tell me why it is bad

from a card I imported 15 images into lightroom on my desktop/external drive computer. During the import I copied the image files to the portable hd. In the lightroom catalog on my desktop I made a bunch of develop settings on these images, plus keywording, rating etc. There were also some new...

The more that I read the less that I understand!

Jim's phrase "a self-contained Lightroom environment" seems to be exactly what I want to be doing here. As long as the catalong backups are kept up to date on the desktop/external drive and the laptop drive, plus the newly added image files, then I should perceive no difficulties. That would...

The more that I read the less that I understand!

Okay so now we are getting someplace. I have already considered this, but (there always seems to be a "but") I also have all of my images on my laptop drive and the LR catalog. This location is also acting as one of my backups. I will still want to synch this drive, new images added to folder...

The more that I read the less that I understand!

Thanks for the reply Cletus. Now minding what you have said, I would still like to know how to do the process of synching two identical catalogs, before I make the decision as to whether or not that I would want to maintain doing so. It very well might be a headache, but how could I decide that...

The more that I read the less that I understand!

I'm lost. Do I want to synchronize one catalog being used daily on two different computers. All I want to understand as to exactly how I keep this catalog synched over the two. Am I about to be constantly synchronizing these two, or am I going to be importing/exporting an updated catalog...

Keeping an identical catalog on two computers and keeping them synched daily

My setup desktop running LR off of external drive laptop running LR off of "D" drive, portable HD holding all negatives plus latest LR catalog Now say that I spend the day out editing existing images, keywording, labels etc. plus import some new images from my cards. All this work being done...

synchronization of two computers 100% successful, but one question?

I put my whole lightroom catalog in order on a portable HD connected to my laptop. Once that was done tip-top I copied the LR catalog plus all of the image files over to my "D" drive on my laptop. That also went 100%. I then proceeded to copy all the images and lrcat. files over to my other...

Trouble copying photos and LR files over to new laptop?

I mean a folder at a time into a new 2010 folder, not single image files. Yes I am doing this on LR and it is working out just fine by moving one folder at a time. All of my images are pretty heavily keyworded already , just tidying up the way the list looks when lightroom is open. Thanks again.

Trouble copying photos and LR files over to new laptop?

Okay so I found and corrected the issue of 2012 Apr 28. The only thing left to move over is the 39 image files under the Mike Hannam Photography heading into the 2012 Apr 23 Zac... file where they belong. I can't seem to get this done because of the missing file numbers on the correct image...

Trouble copying photos and LR files over to new laptop?

, Okay so I followed your above procedure, and it retrieved almost everything except for two items. The first being the now 39 images contained in the Mike Hannam Photography file there at the top. Those images were 41, they belong in the first file which is 2012 Apr 23 Zac... I moved the first...

Trouble copying photos and LR files over to new laptop?

Okay by doing that on the next folder to find it solved both of my problems at one time. Now can I reverse what I did with the first 12 or so files that I lumped together?

Trouble copying photos and LR files over to new laptop?

second problem I see, when I have highlighted a 2011 file, ckick find missing folder, direct it to the 2011 folder where it is now, click ok a window appears and says Lightroom already contains that file do I want to merge these files yes or no. If I click on merge the file is recgnized in the...

Trouble copying photos and LR files over to new laptop?

Seems as though I'm not into the blue yet here. I have started making LR recognize where the files are in the 2011 folder. Now that 2011 folder is highlighted and when clicked on I see all of the previews of the images moved onto it, but the little question marks on each image are still there...

Trouble copying photos and LR files over to new laptop?

Okay I believe I see where the problem lay. I have moved all of the 2011 and 2012 images into the two folders marked 2011, 2012. I believe I made these moves in Bridge and not Lightroom, hence LR's inability to find the files. How do I now either bring all of those individual files back out of...

Do you see where all of my older image files still are active windows with all the LR data intact.

Trouble copying photos and LR files over to new laptop?

Sorry for my writing syle, or lack of it I would guess. I will get those screen shots up as soon as I can get that accomplished here. About the part you highlighted there... As far as I can see there are only three distinct files in my folder named Mike Hannam Photography. One file are the image...

Trouble copying photos and LR files over to new laptop?

While I am trying to resolve the screen shot issue I want to explain what I have found out to date about what I have done here. Here is the full scenario.... purchased D200 and CS 3 same time after both had just been released, lots of camera/photography experience (film), not so much computer...

Trouble copying photos and LR files over to new laptop?

Hope I have done this correctly, lets see... I guess I am going to recquire a little more guidance here. I took the screen shots as directed and placed them on my desktop, where they are now. I click on the insert image icom and the "from computer" tab selected, but I don't get the little window...
