Have images (I thought) on my hard drive, but are DNG files which will not open.
I think I need to download something to allow these files to open, but don't know what it is. Can someone help me?
Thanks

I'm trying to open them up in my "Pictures Library" in Explorer, not on LR.
I've been advised that if I had gone to Windows 10, I would not have had this problem. But I'd heard about too many compatibility problems between Windows 10 and Lightroom, so I stayed with Windows 7.

I'll download the CODEC and see what happens.
Thanks for your help.

Can you be specific on compatibility issues with Windows 10. I have Lightroom 6.latest running on two separate Windows 10 systems, with no observable compatibility issues. I keep my Windows up to date with patches, if that matters.

You have received bad advice. No one here would give you that advice. Windows 10 is stable and integrates well with Lightroom. Roll out with LR6 encountered numerous problems with GPU acceleration and this was especially true with the many different video cards, video drivers and various versions of Windows. Apple Macs with a standard hardware platform did not experience the GPU problem as badly.
IMO, no one should be still running Win7 and this has nothing to do with LR.

You're right.
I received bad advice from well-meaning friends who also listened to bad advice. What I heard was to wait awhile so that any possible compatibility problems could be resolved.

I personally haven't any problems of any sort with LR, other than the fact that I' still learning and that I sometimes listen to the wrong people...

Am in the process of downloading the DNG CODEC as we speak.
Thanks for all the help.

Windows 10 has been out for well over a year now and has had several major updates. Your well-meaning friends caused you to miss the Microsoft free upgrade offer, which would have gotten you Windows 10 at no cost. That ended last July.

If you buy new hardware, you might need to upgrade to Win 10. If you buy a new laptop/PC, you will get Windows 10. Microsoft has made it clear that Windows 10 will be in use for a very long time. Also, Windows 10 is more secure than Windows 7, which means it's less vulnerable to some forms of malware.

Just saying.

Sometimes my "caution" comes back to bite me where it hurts.

The 2009 laptop is slowly grinding to a halt, so a new one with Windows 10 is right around the corner.

Other than being new, I need to understand the advantages to having Win 10. I'm sure there's a lot I don't understand as of yet...

Thanks for the advice.
