Cropping and resizing?

I know this has probably been beaten to death but....

I'm new to printing beyond 8x10 and I’m getting ready to send out some test prints to a lab. I want to save and print them in 11x14 format without loosing the full image I shot. I'm finding when I crop to 11x14 in Lightroom it cuts off half the image. Is there a way to crop and save the image or expand a boarder around the photo so that the image will be centered and print in true 11x14 size at the lab?

What is the original size of your photo in pixels?

Is the crop area correctly rotated in the photo, so the long edge of the crop area is aligned with the long edge of the photo?

I am asking because 11x14 should only cut a small part of a photo, not half of it.

A few other things you may want to know:
You will not throw away any part of your original photo by cropping. Lightroom does not alter the original photo file (though it will alter metadata in the file if it is a DNG or JPG).

If the crop area is not correctly aligned with the photo (for example a landscape crop in a portrait photo), you can rotate the crop area 90 degrees by pulling one of the corners.

Cropping in Lightroom does not crop to a certain size, but rather to a certain aspect ratio. It will always make the larges crop area which fits inside the original photo and has the selected aspect ratio.

Why do you need to crop?
Are you croppping for aesthetic reasons (a very reasonable reason to crop) or to "fit the image in to a predetermined print resolution" (a crazy thing to do).
If the scene as shot is the scene that you want to print then don't crop.
Never throw away resolution if you can help it for the purposes of printing.

If the real issue is using the Print module and the page setup in particular let us know and we will take you through the process - easy once you have got it.

If there is more to this then feel free to clarify the position.

Brian,

While I cannot answer why your image is being cut in half, it is not clear to me if you want to print a full frame of your image on 11x14 paper, or if you wnat to bleed the image and fill up the 11x14 paper with image from edge to edge. If it is the former, then you do not need to crop at all. If it is the latter, which I suspect, then you will lose a bit of image since your camera's aspect ratio is most likely 3:2, not an even multiple of 11x14.
