WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO USE LIGHTROOM WHEN TRAVELING?

I'm going on a two week trip and want to be able to upload my photos from the day onto my Macbook Air and work on them in Lightroom - then transfer all files to my EHD and computer at the office back home. Should I create a catalogue, in my Macbook Air and my portable external hard drive, for the trip?
I've never done this before so I'd appreciate some ideas and guidance from those who have.

That is not a Lightroom question, it's a general Macintosh question. How do you make a copy of any other file on your computer? I'm sure you know this...

I have a clean catalog on my PC laptop. When I travel I download the images on the card into Pictures on my hard drive, then Import. After working on the pictures, before I leave for home, I then copy the files to my external hard drive. When at home I import the images from the external drive onto my desktop. Sometimes I will make copies to the external drive while I am traveling, for safety sake.

This works pretty well for me and does not require merging catalogs

When you are not merging catalog and only tranfer the images to your desktop you lose your work on those images done on your laptop...

Not necessarily!
Cmd-S or Ctrl-S!
Save metadata to file includes Develop settings.
Simply read metadata from file once images are imported into the home catalog.
Not everything translates but most metadata including edits definitely does.

Maybe some information can be transefer with the images but as Johans pointed out; a lot doesn't.
Another example of information that only got transfered with the catalog is all organisational work with collections and collection sets.

I don't think that is a big issue. If you know you're not going to import the travel catalog, then obviously you're not going to waste your time organising that temporary catalog either.

Yes, that's obvious when you know that this information is not transered. So it's important to be aware off before you leave for a travel.

I think what Tony is doing is a great way. I learned something. Putting pictures on my laptop catalog during a trip is more for making sure I've saved them to a place to keep them safe. I doubt I'm going to use vacation time to PP. If I want to PP something to put it on FB or the web, I'll do it on my phone using Snapseed or the like and post it from there. Great stuff here!!

If you cannot recreate the collections or collection sets from the travel catalog (usually a simple process) then shoot a single image of your big toe, import it into the travel catalog, and then export that single image as a catalog.
If one did as previously explained very little will be lost.

Another, in this case foolproof, method is to use one's master catalog when travelling - this is, in fact, what I do. Having everything on external drives simplifies what needs to happen on returning home.

Yes, this is what i do also. Bring a copy of my mastercatalog on a travel (whithout all my images of course. Only the catalog).
