Welcome to the forum. Without knowing anything about your hardware, it is difficult to make a diagnosis.

You need a minimum of 8GB of RAM and approximately 100GB of freespace on your primary hard drive. LR creates lots of temporary files in that working storage (freespace) If you run out of room on that disk drive, the program may crash for lack of resources.

How you get the image files from the camera card to LR is also important. Using the camera as an external disk drive is not recommended. A dedicated card reader (preferably built in) is the best solution.

The latest and final release of version 5 is LR5.7.1 You should update to that version as a starting point since the latest version corrects bugs that may have been in the version that you have. You can find that version here: Install Photoshop Lightroom

And even that is only a general target, certainly not a diagnosis of any specific problems. I have Lightroom running on a MacBook Air with only 4GB RAM and it runs fine. It's slow allright, but I can do anything Lightroom should be able to do, even stitch a couple of 36 MB Sony A7R raw files into a panorama. I have imported images while the free space on my hard disk was as low as 25GB or so, and Lightroom is still as stable (and sometimes as slow, unfortunately) as a rock.

The numbers that I threw out are recommendations. The important part, "If you run out of room on that disk drive, the program may crash for lack of resources." This may be what is happening to the OP.

Agreed, if he's really running out of disk space, then that could be an explanation. My remark was just so he doesn't automatically conclude that he has found the cause of his problem if he's running Lightroom in 4GB RAM or if the free space on his hard disk is say 'only' 50GB.

Thank you gentlemen that was really helpful!
