I got a new Macbook Pro then imported my catalogue from the external harddrive where a backup was , but most of my previews are missing!

    Hi, welcome to the forum.

Previews are stored by Lightroom in a separate sub-folder adjacent to the catalog. When you use Lightroom's catalog backup process, only the catalog and not the previews are backed up. So.....if you imported from a backup catalog, there likely was no corresponding previews folder. Not a big problem. as Lightroom will regenerate previews on the fly, though you can speed up the process by selecting all photographs and then going to the Library menu and select Previews>Render Standard (or 1:1) Previews.

Of course, on a large catralog this will take some considerable times, so best started when you can afford to leave it alone (perhaps overnight).
