Hi,
I have a two part question: one regarding managing large catalogues on two computers and one re speed.
I keep going in circles about this and can't work out the best solution. I wonder if people have some advice on managing large libraries.
I have about 6-7TB of raw data, split up in 6 Catalogues/libraries on 6 different external portable hard drives with identical ones as backup).
I always bought portable external hdds because I travel a lot and wanted to get some work done on planes etc. I only need to take the most recent hdd with me since that would usually have the data on it that I would need to process.
I am now purchasing an iMac and would like to see if consolidating these 6 libraries into one (or at least two, depending how big an HDD I can get) would perhaps be a better solution. However I would still like to be able to work on the most recent (last 6-12 months) of data when I take my macbook on travels. What would be the solution? I understand that creating smart previews would not really work since that would be in conflict with having two catalogues (one on iMac and one on macbook) for the same raw files on an external HDD.
Another way would be to store the majority of data on the master HDD at home and use a portable 2tb hdd when I travel and when I run out of space, consolidate it with the master library and re-start but this seems inelegant plus I'd also like to maximise speed (my 2010 macbook is a real slug, I will be replacing it with a newer one in the near future).
Regarding speed: Is a fusion drive good enough or should I insist on an SDD for the iMAC? I would then have to separate raw data with the catalogue files since external SDDs of that size are very expensive.
Many thanks in advance and look forward to some suggestions from experienced users of LR.
