Cannot relocate or rename files ver 4.1

I am using LR 4.1 with windows 7 on a Sony computer. My files are on a remote drive. I can see and modify (develop) my photos. I can import photos from a different drive. However I cannot rename or relocate my files. I get an error message that states "the folder cannot be renamed or moved". I had no problems on LR-3. I have been told by a Lightroom instructor that it is not a Lightroom issue. I have taken the computer back to the Sony dealer and they of course said it is not a Sony problem. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hi, welcome to the forum.

Is the Sony a new computer? Or have you recently upgraded the Operating System? I'm thinking the problem may be a simple permissions issue on the external drive.....it would explain why you can read from the drive, but nothing else.

Yes the Sony is brand new (3 wks) , with windows 7 installed. After I purchased it I installed LR4 then upgraded to 4.1
I also thought it was conflict with operating system or maybe the sony operating system that sits on top. I asked the sony people to remove the sony system which they said they did but a lot is still there. I have administrator as well as owners rights (they said) so it should not be a problem and yet....

OK, was the computer running LR3 using XP, or Vista, or Win7? Let us know and we'll try to get some instructions to you.

It probably is a simple permissions issue, so neither Lightroom nor Sony can really be blamed.

no the current Sony computer only ran windows 7. I used LR3 on an older computer running XP. Since LR4 will not work on XP I had to get a new computer with windows 7.
    Thanks for your help

Thanks, that's what I was asking, sorry if I wasn't clear. The problem is that the external drive is 'owned' by the XP system, and on Win7 you now have only 'read-only' permissions. To fix this, fellow-Guru Beat Gossweiler has just posted the details of the procedure in our Tips & Tricks section - see here.

Let us know if that fixes the problem for you.

Glad to hear it's sorted. Thanks to Beat, really....he's the one that did all the work in developing the instructions.
