Question Plugins and Workflow: Are they nondestructive?

I've not yet been a plugin user, but am considering taking the plunge with a few of the Nik and onOne plugins. By the design of LR's API, are plugins inherently nondestructive? Do they edit a duplicate file? Do I need to check on a case-by-case basis? Thanks in advance!

No, quite the opposite, and true with all these plugins. They are external editors, creating a duplicate file. Doesn't mean you should avoid them though!

So does that mean they will automatically edit a copy, ala "edit in PS?" and then insert the result back into the catalog (all keyworded and stuff)?

Largely, yes. That's essentially what the plugin element does - creating a TIF, initiating the other editing program, and then registering the new file. Keywording and stuff should come back, but it's dependent on how well the plugin is coded and the kind of metadata support in the other app. So at one point there was a problem with Silver Efex screwing up the keywords. That's now solved, but you have to watch these things like a hawk.
