To your original question.
I have a three year old underpowered 2.1 ghz dual core HP pentium laptop, 4 gigs of ram, windows 7 ultimate, lightroom 4.2, with all photos on an external usb 2.0 hard drive. My D800 raw files take about 10 seconds per photo to create 1:1 previews. Also my sliders...
I can't answer your original question, but for lost files you might try the software called recovermyfiles.
It worked really well for me when I had a hard drive crash.
I think Jim's photo looks really good as well.
To improve it further, you might try ...
photo edit in photoshop with lightroom adjustments
Now in photoshop
duplicate layer (control J)
blend layers with multiply
lower opacity if needed
flatten layers
save
Now, back in lightroom, edit as...
What part of the photo do you want to get the red out of. If it is just the face, just use the local adjustment brush to desaturate the face.
Is this closer to what you are looking for?
Thanks for the advice.
Lightroom 4 works properly with a crowded desktop and lightroom 3 does not work on a crowded desktop. Adobe may be using a different API in Lightroom 4. If this is true, maybe they can change lightroom 3's API to use the same API as Lightroom 4. That would be helpful...
Jim,
I cleaned several icons off of my desktop, and now I get a proper dialog box. Thank you for your help. I am sure you helped many other people as well.
Here is a screen grab from my dialog box.
As you can see, this dialog's use is rather limited.
I am disappointed this bug hasn't been fixed, as it must frustrate many people.
Hi Jim,
I do have lots of icons on my desktop. The issue I have occurs on all my folders, not just those on the desktop. I'll clean up my desktop icons, and see if the bug goes away.
Thanks for the tip.
If this problem is due to excess icons, we now know the problem may not exist in...
Jim, we are both right.
When I try this on a different computer, I get your dialog box.
When I try this on my usual computer, I get a completely lame dialog box.
My install of Lightroom on my usual computer must be corrupted. I'll uninstall lightroom on my usual computer, and reinstall it...
There is a huge difference between lightroom 3.6 and Lightroom beta 4.
For example, try this ....
Create a subdirectory named dogs on the desktop, and put a picture in that subdirectory.
Import that picture file into lightroom 3.
Now go outside of lightroom, and move that subdirectory file...
Best case, it will double the speed ( I think ).
See this for more info ......

Defragging a disc started in the days of slow floppy disc drives. Defragging a floppy disc created a dramatic speed difference. The speed of hard drives are so fast now, special defragging procedures seem less beneficial.
I agree that whatever the operating system does automatically is good...
I know people will disagree with me, but I think defragging is a waste of time and money. I used to do it, but I never saw any improvement in performance.
As a test, use lightroom to backup your catalog. The backed up catalog is now very defragged, just by the process of making a new file...
I am looking forward to playing with the new Beta. It looks nice. I was hoping Lightroom 4 would play more than 1 song in the slideshow, but the other new features will make up for that. Thank you Adobe for the new enhancements. I am looking forward to Victoria Bampton's new book, "Adobe...
A new training video has been released regarding using lightroom and underwater photography.
I am not associated with this video, and I have no financial interests in this video. The link is here.

This author also discusses using lightroom with photoshop...
Update: Pinnacle does allow mixed crops on it's slideshow.
When I first set up Pinnacle 15, the program asked if it wanted my projects to be HD. I answered "yes", assuming that HD video was in a 16 x 9 format. I assumed wrongly
There is a setting under album that you can choose a...
Another question. In the print module, how do I batch print? I can't seem to figure out how to use the custom print layout to batch print several photos? It seems I have to lay out each photo individually.
You are correct about my camera. It has 2 aspect ratios, 16-9 and 4-3. The 4-3 is the native aspect ratio. The 16-9 aspect ratio is cropped in camera. It is a Sony TR5 ( a wonderful point and shoot camera). I prefer the 16-9 aspect ratio because I seldom print any photos, and prefer to view...
Thanks to both of you.
It appears that the print module will do exactly what I wanted to do.
Thank you for your help.
And, thank goodness, I didn't need Photoshop :)
