« on: February 06, 2010, 02:43:04 PM »
Need some help.

I noticed you can only do white balance to photo's that are raw.  how do I get the white balance to work with jpg's?

Hey, Welcome to the forum.
You can do WB on a JPG, but your choices are limited. They were limited first by the WB setting that you used in fixing the JPEG in the camera. With-in LR you stil have three choices. the default "As Shot" reflected the adjusted in the camera WB. "Auto" is going to let LR pick the nreutral in the images it has to work with. And finally, "Custom" will let you move the Slider +/- 100 points on either side of the in camera produced WB which is represented as your "Zero" point.  You can do this for both temperature and tint. Note that you can not adjust to a finite Degree Kelvin since that information was lost when the WB was fixed in the camera.

Your question has been answered but I have an observation.

The best way to have your question answered on this forum, or any other, is to get as many people as possible to read it. The more that do, the better your chances of one or more readers knowing the subject and posting a useful answer. The best way to attract readers to a thread is via a meaningful subject line. If your subject line contains information summarising what the question is about it allows potential readers to know whether they have interest or knowledge in the question area or whether they should simply just move past and look for other threads to read and comment on. Your subject line did not do this and some might even consider it rude, and not read your thread because of it. In this case you were lucky and got a good answer to your question; but please consider providing a more meaningful subject line for future posts.

Another quick tip...  You can create presets for the different WB settings available when looking at a RAW image and then apply them to a jpg image later.

yea thanks guys.  I was actually able to find presets with all the white balance options, I'm not sure if they are an identical match from the camera white balance but my eye can't notice a difference between them.

Interesting.   When I looked at the underlying code behind the preset, I noted that the presets listed the temperature in degrees Kelvin.  Because the slider on the JPEG develop screen only offered a range listed as +/-100 units, I was dubious that this would work on a JPEG.  Since I shoot RAW+JPEG I have two identical image to compare. My camera WB setting is always AWB. When I tried the WB presets, I found the results close to identical.  Even when I used a Tungsten setting on a Daylight photo, they both exhibited the blueish cast that you might expect when the WB attempts to filter out the incandescent reds that aren't there.

Although technically under the covers changing the WB of a jpeg is not the same as RAW it is possible despite many claims that it isn't. 99.9% of humans couldn't tell the difference either.
