Number of photos in collection sets
« on: July 19, 2010, 01:26:00 PM »
I'd love to see the total number of photos in a collection set. For example, say you have a collection set of smart collections, called "Work In Progress". These Smart collections has the names "White Balance", "Minor Adjustments" and "Heavy Editing", for example.
Now, if you could show the total number of photos in the collection set, you would easily be able to see an estimated workload.
Thoughts?

In this example, you'd want to count photos only once if they appear in multiple collections.  There are probably also use cases where you'd want to simply sum the number of photos in each collection.  So it's not quite as simple a request as it may seem at first glance; you probably need some UI to make that selection, or Adobe would need to piss off one group or the other.

Disagree, in this example anyway. If a photo is contained in two collections, means it has twice the work. We all know it doesn't work that way, but two edits are still more than one.
I think it would be more useful and common summing up the number in the collections (i.e. counting one photo many times). Also easier to implement I imagine. UI would clutter it, I think. There's not room for one more switch.

The question "Why does my Collection Set contain more images than my catalog in total" would be obvious ...

I think it would be confusing.

If you look at the toolbar lower down it tells you how many photos are in a collection set if you have it selected.

Sorry if I'm being stupid, how do you mean? Why would it be confusing? You merely have to be aware of the fact that a photo can be counted multiple times.

Yes, but that requires me to go into the set. I'd like to see it without having to go into every set.

...

I'm sure you're not stupid.

It's all so easy if you know how and why. You only have to know that "F" toggles full screen mode, "T" shows the toolbar, "Show photos in Subfolders" affects the count on a parent-folder, "Show Metadata for Target Photos only" affects your metadata application, ......
And still, these are some of the most asked questions in these forums.

I'm not saying it could not be understood, I'm saying it might be confusing for some users not spending day and night with LR.

Yeah, I know how you see can see the numbers once you are inside the folder. I think I'm sort of getting your idea, but I still disagree. I guess I just have to use Lightroom more and find out. :)
I had another thought on how this could be used, but it has slipped my mind. I'll be back.
