Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you want, but you can just move an image to where you want it, and the Sort field will automatically change to Custom Order. There's no need to change that field manually.
Do you have a backup of your catalogue? If you do, move your old one out of the catalogue folder in case you might need it, and unzip the backup into that folder and see if LRC will open it.
When LRC pops up a request to back up your catalogue, there's a "Choose" button to set a new location for that and all subsequent backups.
On the General tab of the Catalogue Settings, you can set when to back up your catalogue. You can set it to "Every time Lightroom Exits." You get to the...
I suppose you could have imported pairs of images before deselecting "treat jpegs next to raws as separate." That toggle only works when you import photos. Deselecting it doesn't magically make the jpegs disappear from your catalogue. If that's not the case and you truly don't have it selected...
I don't know what sfax has to do with anything, but @ is perfectly valid in a folder name in Windows 10:

How is that external disk formatted? Is it a NAS?
Cletus, a hot key is pretty much the same as a shortcut key. There are plenty of single keys in LRC that do things: L, R, G, E, T all come to mind, and there are lots more. They don't need to be combinations.
Lightroom Classic sometimes steals focus out of the keywording box, doing what the OP...
Could you clarify something? Do you get this dialogue box?
Or does the photo just disappear from your catalogue when you type Backspace?
If the latter, LRC is acting like the photo is in a collection. If so, there is something weird happening. Weird problems are often fixed by resetting LRC's...
You could create a copy of your catalogue, open it, and purge unused keywords using the menu item under the Metadata menu. Then you could export your keyword list.
Remember to delete the copy of your catalogue so you don't later get confused.
To add to what Cletus suggested, after you import the images, they will all be in the Previous Import special collection and you can select them all and delete them all at once.
Lee,
It works. I ran that way for over a year. Everything is available except for the Map module, the Develop module, and synching to Lightroom. You will still get updates as they are released and will still be able to use the Quick Develop in the Library module. You can continue to import images.
