I'm trying to create a proof book in LR, a bit like a printed contact sheet book. I can get the page template and flow the images in, but I can't find a way to have a caption of the file name. I don't fancy individually re-naming 500 images with their file names.

Is there a work round for this? Back in Library module, it's possible to alter the captions, but again I can't see where to apply a file name.

Any thought most welcome.
Cheers!

Hi Steve, welcome to the forum! Sorry for the delay in replying.

Check the 4.1RC2 which was uploaded to labs.adobe.com a couple of days ago. They added filename to the available captions in this release.

Thanks, Victoria. I've downloaded the RC2 and that works fine - I can have the text box as 'file name' now. Is there a way to select all text boxes and make a global change to 'file name'? I can only seem to do a page of text boxes at a time, makes for a long process on a proof book.

Many thanks for your help! :)

Go to Book's grid view, and then choose Edit > Select All Photo Cells. Now in the Caption panel, change the photo caption to Filename.

Also, perhaps more for the future, you can set up an Auto Layout preset and tell it to Add Photo Captions. In Book > Preferences, you can set the default to filename.

Caption placement problem

I've built a book using one photo per page, and the second choice, an image space that has a small border all around it. I have several section pages where there is text on the bottom, the third choice. I experimented with captions and trying to select pages to turn on using the caption in the metadata. Shift left click seemed to be doing that, the captions showed up I could shift them from top to bottom or overlay them. The problem is that a few of the pages are stuck on overlay. It won't let me change the caption to below or above, those choices are greyed out. Most of the pages have no problem, though, all three choices are allowed. I tried removing the page, selecting the template again, putting the photo back in, but it's as if that location (page 7) requires overlay. Has anyone encountered something like this?

Stupid question on books; do you have to order from the vendor they list or can I use another vendor like Shutter fly?

Usually that's when there's not much space outside the photo. Select the page, and from the menu at its bottom right choose a slightly different layout.

Currently, not directly through LR. You can export JPEGs of the pages, or a PDF, but they may not be the right size. maybe reimport JPEGs and crop.

I didn't change page layout, I had what I wanted. I just kept banging away until the captions started appearing underneath instead of in the middle. Had to go through one by one, often having to change font to smaller and caption offset from 169 (how it go there I have no idea) down to 4 or 5. This module needs some serious work. First crash of LR 4.1 when I had gone out of the book module to the library, selected a photo to become the background, and instead of going back to collection and selecting the book, I clicked on the book module, which tried to import the whole gallery. I went over and clicked on the collection for the book I was working on and it came back for a couple of seconds, then LR quit working. About one quarter of my captions are left justified and the remainder are centered. All have align with photo checked. I suppose random variety in caption placement is considered a feature, but I'd rather have control over that. I managed to get a text box placed where I wanted it on the cover, but I don't recall how I did it. I haven't been able to budge any other text boxes.
