Hello all,

I’m Corbeau, from Ottawa, and for years I worked as a journalist (with a bit of shooting on the job, where I also dealt with the darkroom processing and printing) before switching careers five years ago. I’m now a high school teacher – special ed, in a dropout recovery program.

However, I was picked to launch a new program which will start in late January 2014. It’s a full-day, five days a week for 20 weeks program, attracting juniors and seniors (grade 11 and 12) from across the school board. Class size will be about 15 students or so. One subject, 75 minutes a day, is Photography 101 -- with Nikon D3000, three-station 850 sq. ft. studio, strobes hooked on tracks or stands. The other subject is Digital Imaging 101, we're talking 110 hours of in-class instruction and work. Can't assign homework because a) those kids might not have LR4 at home and b) the photography computer lab is not available after hours. The program supervisor hinted that's he'd like 75% Lightroom and 25 % Photoshop Elements 8 (The school board won't buy 20 copies of CC, so an old version of Elements will have to do the trick.)

The two other periods of the day are for cooperative education. While the program coordinator is thinking about feeding microstock sites, I'm more thinking about created a photo agency, taking photographs on assignment at the grade schools where my students once attended. Plus, we could get into the whole senior portrait (U.S. style, as opposed to what happens here, where a photographer sets up a couple of lights in the library, every senior dons a cap and gown and smiles for the camera for a picture that ends up in the yearbook.)

Anyway, I’ll spend the better part of August planning the two courses. For the LightRoom/PSE course, I’m thinking of first showing the workflow through the different modules, at a basic level, then going in deeper and in more details in Library, Develop, etc.

Four interesting challenges:

the monitors in the photo computer lab are probably not calibrated (and even if I did a calibration, since the computers run Deep Freeze which restores the computer back to its original configuration each time the computer restarts. (That last bit is a copy-pasta from wikipedia…)

said computers are dated and probably don’t have as much horsepower as the one you’re using right now (but the D3000 NEF files aren’t that large…)

said computers are networked, with the user’s file not stored locally, which could create headaches for the LR catalogue and

while I have a nice SmartBoard to teach, if I prepare a wicked LR edit that goes WOW! on my home monitor, it might turn "BLEAH?" on the classroom's cheap, uncalibrated projector, where everything might be desaturated...

As for me, my personal workflow involves LR4 on a daily basis, with perhaps 10% of my time spent on PS CS2 (Yeah, my own version of Photoshop is outdated, I know. What do you want, I have an addiction to lenses...) I taught myself LR4 following Scott Kelby's most excellent book.

Looking forward to learning a bit every day thanks to this forum...
